On this day January 10, 1863, the world’s first underground railway, opened between Paddington and Farringdon using gas-lit wooden carriages hauled by steam locomotives.

On an opening day, it successfully carried 38,000 passengers. Railway borrowing trains from other railways to supplement the service.
