On this day June 23, 1979, West Indies won their second ICC World Cup tournament. The second ICC World Cup final played between West Indies vs England at Lord’s, London. This match was the second consecutive World Cup final hosted at Lord’s, following the inaugural 1975 final.
West Indies beat England by 92 runs and claim their second consecutive title in front if 32,000 attendance.
England won the toss and elected to field first. West Indies scored 286 for 9, Collis King hit 86 off 66 balls and Player of The Match, Sir Viv Richards hit 138* off 157 balls and became the second player to score century in world cup finals. England Phil Edmonds took 2 wickets.
England scored only 194 runs, captain Mike Brearley hit 64 runs. Joel Garner took 5 wickets and he became the second bowler to take 5 wicket haul in world cup final.
West Indies reached a second consecutive final after defeating Pakistan by 43 runs in the semi-final. Previously, they had won the 1975 final.
