2020, The first country to make period products free
On this day on November 25, 2020, Scotland becomes the first country in the world to make period products free. They made this decision after parliament unanimously passed legislation. However, it was the first introduction in 2017. As a result, Women in Scotland will be no longer have to pay for pads and tampons.
As a result, the Scottish Government will now establish a nationwide scheme. Therefore anyone who needs period products to get them free of charge while compensating providers. It is estimated the scheme will cost around 24 million pounds per year ($44 million).
The Scottish leaders have backed the new law, after a four-year campaign by politician Monica Lennon.
The legislation also obliges secondary schools, universities, and colleges to make the products available in all relevant toilets, while allowing ministers to designate other public institutions — such as pharmacies or community centres — to offer the products.
A bill that would see period products offered for free across the nation has been back by Scottish MPs and has now passed its first vote in Scottish Parliament.
