2006, Sri Lanka Highest Opening Partnership
On this day July 1, 2006, Sanath Jayasuriya and Upul Tharanga set ODI record highest opening partnership of 286 runs against England at Leeds.
Sanath Jayasuriya hit 152 runs off 99 balls and it was the fastest 150 runs untill 2013. It is now 4th fastest 150 runs in ODI. The 152 runs is Jayasuriya 3rd highest Individual score in ODI. Upul Tharanga hit 109 runs.
The 286 runs partnership is Sri lanka’s highest partnership for any wicket. It was the highest opening partnership until 2018. The 286 runs is now 4th highest opening partnerships in cricket history. West Indies hold the highest opening partnership of 365 between JD Campbell and SD Hope against Ireland in 2019.
In the same match Sri Lanka whitewash England team by 5-0. Jayasuriya and Tharanga led Sri Lanka to win the 5th match in the series. Sri Lanka won by 8 wickets with 12 overs to spare.
England won the toss and elected to bat first. England scored 321 runs, Marcus Trescothick hit 121. Lasith Malinga take 4 wickets for 44 runs. Jayasuriya brought up his century in 72 balls, and Tharanga in 82. Jayasuriya became the Player of the match and Player of the series.
