Significance of Vesak Poya – වෙසක් පොහොය දිනයේ වැදගත්කම්!

On this day, the Significance of Vesak Full Moon Poya (Pali: Vesākha, Sanskrit: Vaiśākha), also known as Buddha Jayanti, Buddha Day, and Buddha Puṇṇamā has fallen on the first full moon in April or May.

The Vesak Full Moon Poya Day is one of the greatest significance Poya day out of all Poya days. Therefore it marks three important events in the Lord Buddha’s life. The birth of Siddhartha, attained enlightenment and the passing away of Gautama Lord Buddha took place on this Poya day.

The Birth of Siddhartha

Over two thousand and six hundred years ago, during on this Poya day, the last birth of Lord Buddha took place at Lumbini Sal Garden. Meanwhile, the Prince Siddhartha had walked on seven Lotus flowers which was emerged instantly before him.

Enlightenment of the Lord Buddha

Meanwhile, the Lord Buddha after realising the Four Noble Truths and became attained Enlightenment at Buddhagaya.

The Lord Buddha preached the Dhamma for 45 years. At the age of 80, the Buddha spend his last moment on the couch placed between two Sala trees in the Upavattana Sala grove. Meanwhile, he attained Parinibbana on a Vesak Poya Day.

Visit of the Lord Buddha to Kelaniya for the third time

As a result, after accepting the invitation of Naga King Maniakkhika, the Lord Buddha has visited Kelaniya for the third time in the eighth year of his enlightenment. Meanwhile, Buddha also was visited Solosmasthana.

In 1999, Lakshman Kadirgamar came up with a proposal to the UN General Assembly to make Buddhist Poya day, Vesak Day an international celebration day. As a result, on December 15, 1999, the United Nations declared Vesak Poya Day as an International Holiday.
