Significance of Poson Poya – පොසොන් පොහොය දිනයේ වැදගත්කම්!
On this day, the Significance of Poson Full Moon Poya which has fallen at the June month and become a special day for the entire Buddhist community due to many such special events. However, for Buddhists, this hallowed day of Poson is second only to Vesak poya in terms of significance.
Poya day is celebrated throughout the island, with the most significant ceremonies of the festival being held in Anuradhapura and Mihintale.
Therefore marks important events in the Lord Buddha’s life. Therefore, Meditation at Ruwangei, arrival of Buddhism and first Mahana Upasampada in Sri Lanka took place on this Poya day.

Spreading of Savanak
Spreading of Savanak Buddhas for the first time from the body of the Buddha also happened on this poya day.
Arrival of Buddhism
Arahant Mahinda came to Sri Lanka and established the Lakdiva Buddha Sasana in 236 BC. On this poya day, Indian Emperor Asoka’s son Arahat Mahinda change Sri Lankan King Devanampiyatissa to Buddhism.
40,000 people including King Pathis II took refuge in the Buddha after hearing the Chulla Hatthi Padopama Sutta recited by Arahant Mahinda as the first group of devotees.
Preaching the Samachittapariyaya Sutta to the Gods gathered at the invitation of the Sumana Samaneras sitting at the foot of the Missaka Pawwa.
Mahana Upasampada of Prince Bhanduka at Missaka Pawwe as the first Mahana Upasampada of Lakdiva.
