Significance of Navam Poya | නවම් පොහොය දිනයේ වැදගත්කම්!
On this day, the Significance of Navam Full Moon Poya (Māgha Pūjā or Makha Bucha Day) has fallen on the first full moon in February.
Conducting the first Sangha Conference of the Lord Buddha, the appointment of Arahants Sariputta and Moggallana by the enlightened one as his first two chief disciples, preached Ovada Pratimoksha and abandonment of the Buddha’s Life Edition during on this poya day. Above all, this poya make a special day for the entire Buddhist community due to many such special events.
Conducting the first Sangha Conference of the Lord Buddha
Firstly, Lord Buddha gather all the monks at Veluvanaramaya in Rajagaha and holding the first Sangha Conference of the Lord Buddha.

Appointing Arahant Sariputta and Moggalana as first two main disciples by the Lord Buddha
Most importantly, the Lord Buddha bestowed the title of “Aggasavakes” on Sariputta (Sariyuth) and Moggallana (Mugalan) Thero. The Sariputta was appointed to the prestigious position “Darmasenadhipati” and Moggallana as “Dharma Purohita” receptively.

The Lord Buddha preached Ovada Pratimoksha
The lord Buddha preached Ova Pratimoksha for all diseases to ensure discipline in during on this poya day.

Ayu Sanskara
The Lord Buddha informed Mara at the Chapala Chetiya Garden, that he has decided to give up the Ayu Sanskara three months later on the Vesak full moon poya day.
Gangaramaya temple Navam Perahera
One of the colourful events on this Poya is the Gangarama temple Navam Perahera. Since 1979, each year Hunupitiya Gangarama temple conducting the Navam Perahera in Colombo, Sri Lanka during Navam Poya day. Therefore, it enchanted countless locals and vacationers from the world over with its refreshing mixture of culture and festivity. This traditional procession thrives in the limelight.
Meanwhile, the perahera features more than 1,000 people and many beautifully decorated elephants. Therefore, it accompanied by whip crackers, fire dancers, flag bearers, traditional dancers, and musicians.
