On this day June 14, 1984, England opener, Andy Lloyd’s played his first and last test match. On his home ground of Edgbaston, Lloyd’s was given his Test debut against West Indies.

After scoring 10 runs, and batting for 33 minutes, he was hit on the head by the West Indian fast bowler, Malcolm Marshall. Malcolm Marshall bouncer clattered the guard of his helmet. Lloyd spent several days in the hospital and did not play for the remainder of 1984.

He is the only Test opening batsman never to have been dismissed from the national team. He led Warwickshire to its NatWest Trophy final victory in 1989 against Sussex at Lord’s. Lloyd made a total of 17,211 runs in all first-class cricket, with 29 centuries, and he took 23 wickets.
