1678, First women to receive an academic degree from a university
On this day June 25, 1678, Italian philosopher, Elena Cornaro Piscopia became the first women to receive an academic degree from a university, and the first to receive a Doctor of Philosophy degree.
Elena Degree
Upon the recommendation of Carlo Rinaldini, Felice tutor in philosophy, Felice Rotondi petitioned the University of Padua to grant Cornaro the laurea in theology. The degree was conferred on 25 June 1678, in Padua Cathedral in the presence of the University authorities, the professors of all the faculties, the students, and most of the Venetian Senators, together with many invited guests from the Universities of Bologna, Perugia, Rome and Naples.
Most Learned Woman
Elena was widely acknowledged to be the most learned woman in Italy when she was just a teenager at 19 years old. Elena spoke a total of seven languages fluently.
Tutoring in Latin and Greek
When she was seven, she began receiving tutoring in Latin and Greek. She devoted the final seven years of her life to charity and working with the poor.

On 5 June 2019, Google celebrated her 373rd birthday with a Google Doodle.
Elena, Birth and Death
She Born June 5, 1646 at Venice, Republic of Venice and she tragically died at the young age of 38 of tuberculosis on July 26, 1684.
The second Women, Laura Bassi
The next female doctorate was granted by the University of Bologna in 1732 to Laura Bassi.
