1912, First to Take-Two Hat-tricks in the Same Test
On this day May 28, 1912, Australian leg-spinner Jimmy Matthews became the first and only bowler to take two hat-tricks in the same Test match. He did against South Africa on a single day.
Jimmy Matthews Two Hat-tricks
None of his dismissals required the support of any fielders. The very first batsman was bowled, then two were leg before wicket, then another bowled, and finally, two more caught and bowled.
South African wicket-keeper Tommy Ward was Jimmy’s third victim in both hat-tricks, being the only known instance of a king pair on debut in Test cricket.
Matthews did this in the first match of the Triangular Tournament a nine-Test series that also involved England. Matthews never played after that tournament.
He played only 8 Tests and he finished his career with only 16 wickets. He scored 153 runs with one half-century.
