1939, First Batsman to Score Two Centuries in both innings at Lord’s
On this day June 27, 1939, West Indian batsman, George Headley became the first batsman to score two centuries in both innings of a Test match at Lord’s. He scored 106 and 107 against England.
It was the second time in his career that, he had made two centuries in both innings. In 1930, Headley scored 144 and 112 against England at Bourda, Georgetown.
Headley also became the second batsman to scored two centuries in both innings of a Test match, England batsman Herbert Sutcliffe was the first batsman to so.
Headley played 22 Test matches and scored 2,190 runs including 10 centuries. He is one of the best batsmen to play for the West Indies and one of the greatest cricketers of all time. He was chosen as one of the Wisden Cricketers of the Year in 1934.
The first player to score centuries in both innings of a Test match was Warren Bardsley of Australia, who made 136 and 130 against England in August 1909. Since then, the feat has been accomplished by 69 players on 86 different occasions as of October 2019.
The Englishman Allan Steel became the first player to score a Test century at Lord’s when he made 148 against Australia in 1884. Sri Lanka’s Aravinda de Silva is the only player to remain not out in both innings.
