First batsman to hit identical Test Century in the same test in 1982

On this day during on September 17, 1982, Sri Lanka batsman Duleep Mendis became the first and only Sri Lankan batsman to hit an identical Test Century in the same test.

Duleep scored 105 runs in the first innings and second innings against India in Chennai at MA Chidambaram Stadium. He became the 35th batsman to scored centuries in both innings of a Test match.

Duleep is the only Sri Lankan cricketer to score a test century in Chennai at MA Chidambaram Stadium until now and he has done it twice in the same Test by scoring 105 runs in both innings.

In the 1st Inning, Sri Lanka had lost two early wickets for 11 runs, and Mendis was sent in to bat with Roy Dias. Their partnership was worth 153 runs, then a third-wicket record for Sri Lanka. Mendis made his maiden century and it helped Sri Lanka bat out the first day.

Duleep 2nd inning century helped Sri Lanka to eventually draw the Test and became the man of the match. This was the first drawn Test series in Sri Lankan history.

Sri Lanka captien Bandula Warnapura won the toss and choes to bat first. Sri Lanka scored 346 & 394 innings. India scored 566/6d & 135/7 innings. India needed 175 runs to win the test match, however, at the end of the day, the Sri Lanka mage draw the test match.

Identical Test Century in the same test

Only two batsmen have made an identical Test Century in the same Test match. Duleep Mendis and Misbah-ul-Haq. In 2014, Pakistan batsman, Misbah-ul-Haq sored 101 runs in both innings against Australia at Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium, Abu Dhabi.

Duleep is the first Sri Lankan to become a man of the match against India 1979 World Cup. He was awarded the Deshamanya (Sri Lanka’s second-highest national honour) in 1996.
