On this day during on May 26, 2000, Sir Arthur Charles Clarke was knighted “for services to literature” at a ceremony in Colombo.
The award of a knighthood has been announced in the 1998 New Year Honours list, and two years after the title was conferred on him.
However, Clarke’s health did not allow him to travel to London to receive the latter honor personally from the Queen, so the United Kingdom’s High Commissioner to Sri Lanka invested “Clarke” as a Knight Bachelor at a ceremony in Colombo.

Clarke was a British science writer, futurist, inventor, undersea explorer, science fiction writer, and television series host. Clarke has made Sri Lanka his home and has lived on the island since 1956.
He died on March 19, 2008 (aged 90).
